Gear Train

Gear Train is a mechanical puzzle on a walnut board. Seat brass gears on the pegs so the crank's turn reaches the door gear, turning it the way its arrow points.

How to play

The crank always turns clockwise. Take gears from the tray and seat them on the bare pegs. Gears mesh when their teeth touch, so a peg suits one size and not another.

Every gear turns against its neighbour. An odd number of gears between the crank and the door gear turns it the same way as the crank. An even number turns it backwards. Two meshed gears pushed opposite ways jam the train.

A gear won't seat on a taken peg, off the board's edge, into another gear or over a bare peg. The caption says which.

The board is solved the moment the door gear turns the right way. The clock starts at your first move.

Par is the fewest gears that solve the board, shown beside your gear count. Clear sends every gear back to the tray.

Levels

  1. Seat two gears: three pegs and two gears.
  2. A peg suits one size: the gears come in different sizes.
  3. Which way it turns: a second route reaches the door gear but turns it backwards.
  4. Five gears and more: seven to nine pegs, a bigger tray, and a route to choose.

Daily challenge

Today's board is a level 4 board, the same for everyone. It changes at midnight your local time. Only your first try is scored. Solving on consecutive days builds a streak.

Scoring

Your time on today's board is your score, and lower is better. The daily board ranks each player's first solve of the day.
